Schumacher SP-200 2.4W Solar Battery Maintainer

Is this the coolest looking battery maintainer that you have ever seen?  In this article I am going to look beyond the image and review the Schumacher SP-200 2.4W Solar Battery Maintainer on it’s own merits.

While the Battery Tender line contains many great products, it’s own solar battery maintainer is substantially more expensive. Read a complete review of the Battery Tender 021-1163 5W Solar Maintainer.

The SP-200 is a self contained maintainer.  Once it is hooked up, it will maintain the charge in your battery using no electricity.  This makes the assumption that  there will be enough sunlight to run the unit.  In most instances there shouldn’t be a problem as long as the maintainer is in a place where the sun will hit it whenever possible.  There is also something called amorphous technology which will allow charging on cloudy days.

I have read many reviews as well as visited the company website. The vast majority of reviewers are positive.  The only concern I have found is that because this is a manual vs. an automatic charger, you may run into problems when maintaining a smaller batter.  I was unable to find an instance where a battery was ruined so it may be an unfounded concern.  Certainly for larger batteries there should be no concern.

Overall, I really like the look and functionality of the SP-200.  For anyone with a motorized toy that is left outside and not used for long stretches, this is a battery maintainer to take a close look at.  You can hook it up and forget about it.  You also don’t need to run an extension cord that you will later trip on.  Don’t ask me how I know.

Reviews…

Have a truck I don’t drive every day but alarm drains steady power and after 4 days dead. Not only does that kill a standard car battery but makes it inconvenient to get the truck started. So after my research, went with this solar maintainer because its very simple and well made. No need to worry about overcharging a car battery since its so low of wattage. The one downside or warning is don’t start the vehicle with this still plugged in because it supposedly will backfeed from the alternator and fry the unit. I wish there was a way where I could just hardwire this in and not worry about it truly, still researching if a controller will prevent that. By the way …  Read More
